Who are in risk?
If you have type 2 diabetes or are significantly overweight (obese), your risk of developing NASH is higher. It is also advisable to consult a hepatologist or gastroenterologist if you have any of the following conditions:
Elevated blood pressure
High triglyceride levels
Irregular cholesterol levels
If you have type 2 diabetes or any of these conditions, it is recommended to monitor your liver for scarring every one to two years.
NASH stands for Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis. It’s a severe form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NASH progresses from fat accumulation (steatosis) in liver cells, common in obesity or diabetes, to inflammation, causing cell injury and death. This leads to fibrosis (scar tissue formation) and, in advanced stages, cirrhosis, where the liver structure is severely altered. 20% people with fatty liver disease have NASH.
